OpenSocial is about data, distribution and money

Though the OpenSocial API movement has been welcomed by most of the web enthusiasts, the overall response has been mixed of praises and criticism. The father of Web 2.0 Tim Orielly has already termed OpenSocial as “boring”. According to him Google’s OpenSocial has failed to understand the two fundamental building blocks of Web 2.0 i.e. the open data and loosely coupled small pieces. Still early days to comment on the credibilty of this term “boring”.

Data can’t go out of container?

And we thought we would be able to access various social networks data from one place. But, it is now clear that data can’t go out of containers. The developers go so excited when the rumours had it that with opensocial all the containers will get bridged by the abstract data lines. This isn’t the case. People data API will be a good step in this direction, who knows may be Google and company have some better plans altogether. Well, lets see.

And what about distribution?

Distribution system of applications will be crucial for developers. We are all hoping that it would be good enough to give exposure to good applications in viral way. We can expect something facebook’s distribution system. Mini feeds and application invitations will play a vital role.

Ad Policy?

Not sure, how the developers would monetize their applications. One thing is for sure, developers have the option(Facebook) and they will move on if they don’t get their dues. The monetization system will hopefully be good cosidering the competion between facebook & OpenSocial.

Still waiting for the launch of full API, just can’t wait to try my hands on the people data API. The team is working and listening, this is what their blog says.
